Matthew Merrett
Content: Mathew Merrett is a street photographer who has a selection of photographs that he has called 'Urban Decay'. In these photos he has gone to places of ruin and decay that still relate to a very modern day society. These places involve that of factories, streets and more selective things/objects such as worn paintings, broken and damaged walls and rotten decaying plug sockets. Each of these photos has a very dark tone to them, and the colours used are very bland and lifeless as a reflection of the genre and purpose.
Form: Merrett has established scenery all of a very similar nature. The content used is damaged and stripped, whether it be larger more open environments or close-ups of specific things/objects. Each photo is dark, some covered in shadow and some even taken in black and white, again emphasising the broken and disintegrated nature to them. There is no specific composition aligned to each photo, but instead each has been taken in a very purposeful way so that viewers can see them in the rotten way that Merrett intended. Each photo is very desolate and empty, potentially highlighting that they are void of life, again linking back to the process of decay. Even the bigger more open environments do not represent or show any form of life, therefore I think it is important that I to try to abide by these restriction's when attempting recreate this style for myself.
Process: Merrett has identified locations and subjects that all have a similar vibe to them. He has taken them in their natural environment without altering their appearance either before or after the pictures were taken. The lighting used is also natural, and it adds to the bare nature of each photo that he hasn't decided to glamourize them with any form of light. He has gone to locations that you wouldn't necessarily cross in real life, and hasn't just pictured common places or environments that are or are becoming know for their deterioration but ventured further into aspects giving him the right to title it 'Urban'.
